Japan National Stadium

The Japan National Stadium in Tokyo was designed by Kengo Kuma. With a seating capacity of around 68,000 – expandable to 80,000 for major sports events – it served as the centerpiece for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The stadium’s design integrates natural materials – timber sourced from all 47 prefectures – which provide shade, airflow and a distinctly Japanese architectural gesture. Its low-profile, multi-eaved roof echoes traditional forms and blends seamlessly with the surrounding Meiji Shrine forests, while the steel‑wood hybrid structure ensures resilience against earthquakes and efficient construction.
